A 15-year-old boy suspected of robbery was struck by a van Saturday when he ran onto California 33 in Ventura while being chased by police, authorities said.
The Ventura boy, who was not identified because of his age, suffered a broken leg and was scheduled to undergo surgery Saturday night at a local hospital, said Ventura Police Lt. David Inglis.
The boy is suspected of taking $500 from a small neighborhood market in the 300 block of West Ramona Street at 5:30 p.m. Inglis said the boy was armed with a knife.
As soon as officers arrived at the market, they began chasing the boy, Inglis said. He was struck after jumping a fence and running onto the highway near Stanley Avenue.
The crash forced the closure of the southbound lanes for more than an hour. Traffic was rerouted at Stanley Avenue, authorities said.
A knife and cash were recovered, Inglis said.
