Junior Lifeguards Dive In
About 500 youths aiming to become more ocean-savvy are participating in the junior lifeguard programs in Ventura and Port Hueneme this summer.
The youths, ages 9 to 16, learn such things as how to save swimmers from rip currents and administer first aid. They also surf, run along the beach and participate in several junior lifeguard competitions.
“The main goal is to raise ocean awareness for the kids,†said Ryan Brown, who coordinates the Port Hueneme Junior Lifeguard Program. “When they go down to the beach, we want them to feel comfortable.â€
The Ventura Junior Lifeguard Program held a contest at Ventura State Beach on Friday morning. The event drew hundreds of local and out-of-county junior lifeguards.
The youths competed in a variety of activities, such as paddle boarding, surfing and running. The program runs though the end of the month.
