Fish Report
FRESHWATER
CASTAIC LAKE--A one-pound pacu--an exotic fish apparently turned loose by its former owner--was caught in the upper lake on a night crawler. Otherwise, small bass are providing most action, taking plastic worms and mudsuckers. Clyde Sanchez, La Crescenta, 14- and nine-pound catfish, on mackerel. The lower lake is producing mostly bluegills.
PYRAMID LAKE--Striped bass are reluctant to feed on the surface, but they’re holding at 10 feet and biting on anchovies. Largemouth bass are biting off points on night crawlers and plastics, though the fish are small.
LAKE PIRU--Trout fishermen trolling deep with Needlefish are getting a few. Bass fishermen are doing OK with plastics, crankbaits and night crawlers at 20-30 feet.
CASITAS LAKE--Top catch, a 15-pound bass by Jesus Lomeli, Los Angeles, on a green and black tube bait. Top catfish, 20 1/2 pounds by Shane Whitacker, Quartzite, Calif., on mackerel at five feet. Trout are being caught by trollers using Needlefish by the dam.
JESS RANCH LAKES--Trout fishing is fair in both lakes on rainbow Power Bait and inflated night crawlers. Catfish and bluegills don’t seem hungry.
IRVINE LAKE--A 19 1/2-pound catfish was caught by Eden Garcia, Riverside, whose four-fish stringer totaled 32-4. Bass fishing is fair on plastics and bluegills are biting on night crawlers.
OSO RESERVOIR--A 10-pound 9-ounce bass was weighed and released by Kory Snyder, Los Alamitos. He was using a Fat Rap along the south shore. Bass and catfish are active.
LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Catfish averaging two to five pounds are keeping people busy, especially at night. Mackerel, chicken livers and marshmallow-mealworm combos are working. Bass fishermen are doing OK with small crankbaits and dark plastics.
ANAHEIM-CORONA LAKES--Catfish action is steady and the concession has an ongoing contest with a $1-million grand prize, which may or may not be claimed in September. Details: (714) 996-3508 or (909) 277-4489.
LAKE SKINNER--Catfish remain the attraction, and anchovies and chicken livers remain the top attractions of fish up to eight pounds. Striped bass are taking the same baits and largemouth bass are hitting plugs and plastics. A catfish derby is scheduled Saturday.
LAKE PERRIS--Small bass are biting on crankbaits in mornings and afternoons. The dam and Rock Climbers’ Cove are good areas. Bluegill are biting on crickets at the east end and island.
BIG BEAR LAKE--Trout fishing has slowed but a 9-1 rainbow was checked in by an unknown angler, who used a night crawler-flasher combo.
GREEN VALLEY LAKE--Lots of limits of mostly pan-sized trout, but a four-pounder was caught by Marc Menendez, Riverside, on a yellow Roostertail.
LAKE JENNINGS--Bass were weighed in at 11-8 and 9-12. Catfish are biting at night on mackerel.
SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--An 11-pound bass caught on a plastic worm highlights a fair bite at Hodges, where crappies are also active. Bluegill are cooperating best at Lower Otay. Bass fishermen might also try El Capitan.
LAKE CUYAMACA--Trout limits are common on standard baits and jigs. A dry-fly trout bite is happening about 7:15 nightly. Catfish action is fair too.
BISHOP AREA--North Lake is a good place for float-tubers, who are doing well with damsel nymphs and olive matukas. South and Sabrina lakes are also producing, as is the creek. The lower Owens wild-trout section is fair on caddis emergers.
MAMMOTH LAKES AREA--Convict Lake is the best bet for quality. Top trout at Convict, a 7-3 rainbow by Doug Tuttle, Irvine, on a silver-orange Kastmaster. Dozens weighed in at three pounds or more. Special regulations are in effect at Crowley, where there’s a two-fish limit of fish 18 inches or longer, and where only artificial lures with barbless hooks may be used. Lake Mary, Twin Lakes and Mammoth and Rock Creeks are good choices, but the whole area is producing. A 9 1/2-pounder was caught at Mary on a Trout Teaser.
JUNE LAKE LOOP--A 6-2 rainbow was caught at June on a mini-jig and another 6-5 was caught at Silver on a Kastmaster. All the lakes are producing, but Rush Creek is running low and fishing is tough unless you can find a deep pool before other anglers do. Try salmon eggs or a small spinner.
BRIDGEPORT--Good fishing throughout this region is the rule, except for the East Walker River, which remains unpredictable because of changing flows. Upper Twin produced a 6 1/2-pound rainbow for a fly fisherman using a woolly bugger.
