Police Nab Suspect After Santa Ana Bank Robbery
A robbery suspect who fled a Santa Ana bank Thursday was captured by police after he ran along a creek bed and through a residential area, authorities said.
Kyle Van Dewetering, 21, of Whittier was arrested on suspicion of robbing a Cal Fed branch on Main Street near the Santa Ana Freeway, Santa Ana Police Sgt. Raul Luna said.
Witnesses said a man in black clothing and a black ski mask entered the bank about 2:20 p.m. and demanded money from a teller. The employee told officers the man displayed a black object that appeared to be the grip of a gun.
Once he had the money, the robber fled on foot into the dry Santiago Creek bed.
When police responded, they saw a man running along the creek and apprehended Van Dewetering when he tried to cut through a residential area at Heliotrope and Park streets.
