Monroe Nets City’s Top Seeding
Led by top-seeded Monroe High, six of the top seven spots in the City Section boys’ volleyball playoffs were designated to Valley-area teams on Thursday.
In an unprecedented night of seeding success for City teams in the region, Monroe was followed by Taft, Granada Hills, Garfield, Chatsworth, Poly and Grant for the top seven seedings in the 16-team City Championship playoffs, which begin Tuesday.
For the first time, the top three spots in the upper-level City Championship playoffs went to Valley teams.
“It’s not a total surprise, but I think we earned it,†said Coach Bob Berrenson of Monroe.
“What happens after now is up for grabs. There’s no sure things.â€
In the first round, Monroe (13-0) hosts No. 16 Westchester (6-7), Taft (11-1) hosts No. 15 Van Nuys (9-4) and Granada Hills (10-3) hosts No. 14 Narbonne (10-3).
In the lower-level City Division playoffs, Kennedy (5-8) was seeded No. 1 and Canoga Park (7-6) was seeded No. 4.
Also seeded are North Hollywood (5-8) at No. 8, Verdugo Hills (5-8) at No. 13 and Birmingham (4-9) at No. 15.
