Sharon May Face Bribery Charges

Israeli police have recommended indicting Foreign Minister Ariel Sharon on bribery and fraud charges, Israel Radio said. Police questioned Sharon last month about a 1997 trip he made to Russia as national infrastructure minister with businessman Avigdor Ben-Gal, a retired major-general. Police were investigating suspicions that Sharon tried to help Ben-Gal clinch a multimillion-dollar natural gas deal with Russia in exchange for false testimony from Ben-Gal in a libel suit Sharon had brought against an Israeli newspaper.
