MIAMI — Seven of eight Cuban migrants rescued from a raft in the Florida Keys were repatriated by the U.S. Coast Guard Friday, the agency said.
So far this month, 30 Cuban migrants have been repatriated, bringing the year’s total to 802.
One migrant who was deemed by U.S. authorities to have a stronger case for political asylum was taken to the U.S. Naval Base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for further interviews with immigration officials.
The eight Cubans were picked up near Key Largo Tuesday. They were transferred aboard a Coast Guard cutter and given food, water and medical attention before being interviewed by immigration officials.
