Friday morning during the two hours before sunrise, the thin crescent moon sits low in the east. Five degrees directly above the moon is the red planet Mars, and six degrees above Mars is Regulus, the brightest , the brightest star in Leo the Lion. Regulus is 77 light years away from Earth, compared with Mars, which which is 18 light-minutes and the moon, which is one-quarter light second from Earth.
