Davenport No. 1 in World, but No. 2 in Tournament
Sandrine Testud of France brought newly crowned No. 1-ranked Lindsay Davenport down to earth with a 7-5, 6-3 victory Sunday in the final of the Porsche Grand Prix at Filderstadt, Germany.
The unseeded Testud, 26, broke Davenport’s serve three times in the first set and twice more in the second to earn $79,000 in winning the second title of her career.
Davenport, 22, appeared listless in her first final since dethroning Martina Hingis from the No. 1 ranking earlier in the week.
“Sandrine has played incredibly well this week,” Davenport said. “I simply couldn’t beat her.”
By reaching the semifinals of the $450,000 indoor tournament, Davenport ensured her rise to No. 1 when the new computer rankings come out today, ending Hingis’ 80-week reign.
It was only the third loss for Davenport since this summer’s Wimbledon. It was her seventh final in a year in which she has won six titles.
Davenport is assured of holding the No. 1 ranking another week because Hingis pulled out of a tournament in Zurich, Switzerland, with an ankle injury.

The two reached the final by upsetting Spaniards in rain-interrupted semifinals. Puerta ousted top-seeded Alex Corretja, 7-5, 6-2, and Squillari got past Galo Blanco, 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2).
