No Updates Get NHL’s Attention

Well, it’s difficult to know because of General Manager Pierre Gauthier’s media policy on medical news. The press notes provided by the team do not include updates on injuries--a violation of the NHL’s policy, according to a league spokesman.

“You are entitled to timely updates on injuries,” said Frank Brown, NHL vice president of media relations. He plans to look into the matter.

Gauthier has determined that all medical updates must be issued only by Coach Craig Hartsburg, who is not a trained medical professional.

The Ducks recalled Mike Crowley from Cincinnati of the American Hockey League in an attempt to bolster their defensive ranks. Crowley did not play against the Flyers, however.

Ruslan Salei served the second game of a five-game suspension for slew footing Phoenix’s Daniel Briere during an exhibition last week.

Jason Marshall was in the lineup against the Flyers, but is nursing a bruised right foot. He was injured blocking a shot against Washington.

The Flyers, searching for a right winger to keep up with center Eric Lindros and left wing John LeClair, have settled on former Duck minor-leaguer Mike Maneluk.

Maneluk, who assisted on Lindros’ second goal, played in the Duck minor-league system in 1994-95 and 1995-96. But he was dealt to the Ottawa Senators for Kevin Brown after scoring 33 goals with 71 points for Baltimore of the American Hockey League.

Gauthier, then Ottawa’s general manager, traded Maneluk to the Flyers for future considerations Oct. 21, 1998.
