Anteaters Defeat UC Santa Barbara in Soccer
UC Irvine broke its three-game winless streak Sunday, defeating UC Santa Barbara, 2-0, in Big West Conference women’s soccer at Anteater Stadium.
The Anteaters (9-2-2, 3-0-1) hadn’t scored a goal in their last three games before Sunday but ended that streak early when senior midfielder Simone Ferrara curled a corner kick into the goal three minutes into the game.
Irvine forward Nicole Bucciarelli scored in the 51st minute off a pass from forward Allison Marra for a 2-0 lead. It was Bucciarelli’s team-leading ninth goal of the season.
Santa Barbara is 3-10, 1-5.
In another Big West Conference game:
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 2, Cal State Fullerton 2--The Titans rallied after falling behind, 1-0, at the half, to take a 2-1 lead.
Fullerton (5-7-1, 2-1-1) was led by Dolores Browning, who scored in the 60th minute to give the Titans a 2-1 lead. Two minutes earlier Browning assisted on a rebound goal by Amy Barnes.
Gina Oceguera scored twice for visiting San Luis Obispo (6-4-3, 3-0-3).
In nonconference men’s soccer:
UC Irvine 2, University of San Diego 1 (OT)--Freshman Lawrence Smalls and senior Pat Lee scored and Shaun Callahan and Jason Thompson had assists for host UC Irvine (6-5).
In nonconference women’s volleyball:
UC Irvine 3, William & Mary 2--Jacqui Cosgrove came off the bench in the fourth game and helped UC Irvine rally for a 15-8, 6-15, 12-15, 15-8, 15-9 victory.
She had six kills and two blocks in the fourth game and two kills, an ace and three digs in the fifth game. Larissa Carter and Brooke Witt each had 16 kills for UC Irvine (6-14).
