Top Regional Junior Tennis Players Vie in Doubles

Nearly 100 players from the region will participate in the Southern California Tennis Assn.’s 96th Southern California junior sectional doubles championships running today and Sunday, and continuing Oct. 17-18, at Los Caballeros Sports Village in Fountain Valley.

Approximately 400 teams will play for championships in 15 age divisions in boys’, girls’ and mixed doubles competition in the tournament, which is required for SCTA-ranked doubles players.

Tiffany Brymer, ranked No. 4 in Southern California for girls’ 18 and under, has been cleared to play for Rio Mesa High and will make her debut next week. Brymer, a senior who is the sister of former USC lineman Chris Brymer, moved from Apple Valley to live with the Sauer family in Somis.

Karen Sauer, who is taking care of Brymer, said the Oxnard Union High School District approved Brymer’s eligibility Friday.

BOXING

Heavyweight Lance Whitaker of Granada Hills improved to 17-0 Thursday with a second-round knockout of Jason Yarose,

Whitaker has 15 knockouts. The fight was Whitaker’s first since May, when he suffered a cut on his forehead.

BASEBALL

Brandon Murphy, expected to be the No. 1 pitcher at North Hollywood High this season, has transferred to Highland in Palmdale.

JURISPRUDENCE

James Bent of Santa Clarita was sentenced to 10 years in state prison Tuesday after being found guilty of gross vehicular manslaughter in the Jan. 11 automobile accident that killed Lauren Blaire, a softball player at Saugus High.

HONORS

Football player Marcus Brady and women’s volleyball player Laura Szymanski were selected Cal State Northridge athletes of the month for September.

Brady completed 64 of 96 passes for 807 yards and seven touchdowns with no interceptions. He led the Big Sky Conference in passing efficiency and was third in total offense.

Szymanski, a middle blocker from Germany, led the conference in kills with an average of 6.17.
