Flyers Open With Shutout
John Vanbiesbrouck made a successful debut with the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday night, winning a goaltending duel with former teammate Mike Richter in a 1-0 victory over the New York Rangers at New York.
Vanbiesbrouck, who signed as a free agent with the Flyers in the off-season after playing with the Florida Panthers, made 20 saves for his 30th shutout.
The way the Flyers played defense in front of Vanbiesbrouck, who played 10 years in New York, it was a relatively easy victory. Richter had it tougher, facing 30 shots and giving up only a second-period power-play goal to Alexandre Daigle.
Florida 4, Tampa Bay 1--Viktor Kozlov had two goals and two assists and Mark Parrish scored his first two NHL goals as the Panthers christened their new $185-million arena with a rout at Sunrise, Fla.
Parrish, who tied for the league lead with six exhibition goals, scored his first goal at 2:34 of the third period to break a 1-1 tie. His goal at 8:24 increased the Panthers’ lead to 3-1.
San Jose 3, Calgary 3--The Sharks scored two goals in the third period to tie the Flames in Tokyo.
