San Clemente Pours It On Again in Romp Over Foothill

After losing its first two games of the season, San Clemente has come back with a vengeance, winning three consecutive games, including Friday night’s 59-19 nonleague victory over Foothill at Tustin High.

San Clemente (3-2) has outscored its last three opponents, 127-33.

“Coach [Mark] McElroy says he just thinks his team is on fire right now,” Foothill Coach Casey Mazzotta said. “But they’re a great football team. They are on fire, playing well and talented. That’s a great combination.”

Senior Chris McCormack, San Clemente’s leading rusher, was unstoppable. He carried the ball 14 times for 134 yards and three first-half touchdowns.

On two of those touchdowns, Foothill’s defense had him in its grasp, but McCormack kept running, knocking linebackers and defensive backs out of his way. He scored on runs of five, 78 and seven yards and also caught four passes for 80 yards.

Sophomore running back Chris Smith was not far behind McCormack, scoring two touchdowns in the first half, giving the Tritons a 45-13 halftime lead. Smith carried the ball seven times for 129 yards, scoring on runs of 79 and 17 yards.

Triton kicker Tim Hollis was eight of eight on extra-point kicks and made a 29-yard field goal.

Junior Chris Roesti also scored two touchdowns for San Clemente, scoring on a three-yard run and a 55-yard reception from sophomore quarterback Dan Coviello. Coviello completed eight of 12 for 170 yards and one touchdown.

Foothill (2-3) looked like it might give the Tritons a better game in the early going, but after two impressive drives came up short, the Knights were only able to score 13 first-half points.
