Gorman’s Passing Helps Sailors Continue Rolling

NORTH COUNTY

Steve Gorman completed 16 of 20 passes for 180 yards and three touchdowns to lead Newport Harbor to a 40-7 nonleague victory over Magnolia Friday at Glover Stadium.

Oscar Garcia scored on a seven-yard pass from Gorman in the first quarter. Peter Sekona scored for Magnolia on a 16-yard run to tie the score, 7-7. Garcia caught nine passes for 86 yards.

Lamar Lee and Robert Peredia (92 yards in 22 carries) each scored touchdowns on two-yard runs in the second quarter to give the Sailors (5-0) a 19-7 halftime lead.

Garcia, Justin Jacobs and Eddie Johnson scored in the third quarter for the Sailors. Magnolia is 3-2.

* Western 49, Sonora 10: Will Ruffin and Trevell Jackson each rushed for three touchdowns for Western at La Habra High.

On the Pioneers’ first offensive play of the game, quarterback Jason Baughman completed a 45-yard pass to Jeff Lamendola. On the next play, Ruffin ran in from seven yards.

After Sonora cut the lead to 7-3 on a 35-yard field goal in the first quarter, Western reeled off six consecutive touchdowns.

Jackson scored on runs of 19 and three yards in the second quarter, and Ruffin had a 34-yard run to give Western (4-1) a 28-3 halftime lead.

Ruffin then ran in from nine yards in the third quarter, and his 65-yard reception later in the quarter set up Baughman’s five-yard touchdown pass to Jamiah Williamson, giving the Pioneers a 42-3 lead.

Corona del Mar Blocks Key Westminster Kick

Mark Hatfield blocked a point-after-touchdown kick with 10 minutes 9 seconds remaining, and it proved to be the difference as Corona del Mar beat Westminster, 14-13, in a nonleague game.

Westminster (2-3) had a chance to win with 21 seconds left in the game, but Kelly Coburn’s 30-yard field goal attempt was wide left.

The Lions’ chance to win came after Corona del Mar kicker Dany Gonzales missed a 43-yard field-goal attempt with 2:18 to go.

Coburn completed 15 of 27 passes for 152 yards. Westminster’s Mike Cope led in rushing, gaining 84 yards in 22 carries.

Nate Lemmerman led the Sea Kings (4-1) with 75 yards in 13 carries.

* Aliso Niguel 44, Orange 12: Jared Hill completed seven of 13 passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns to lead Aliso Niguel (1-4) in a nonleague game at El Modena High.

Jeff Stanton scored one touchdown and gained 78 yards in nine carries. He also caught four passes for 73 yards for Aliso Niguel, which led at the half, 27-6.

Defensive lineman Dean Gerasimou returned a fumble 30 yards for a touchdown and had six tackles for the visiting Wolverines. Nick Assad gained 50 yards in two carries and scored a touchdown.

Orange (0-5) scored touchdowns in the second and fourth quarters.

* Santa Ana Valley 21, Estancia 0: The Falcons scored on the second play of the game, survived five first-half fumbles and earned the victory at Santa Ana Stadium.

Santa Ana Valley (2-3) took a 7-0 lead 59 seconds into the game Miguel Guerrero’s 72-yard pass to David Guevara. Eliu Fatu’s 17-yard touchdown run in the second quarter increased the lead to 13-0.

Guerrero scored on a four-yard run in the fourth quarter and Aaron Barragan followed with a two-point reception to make it 21-0. Hardy Fatu led Valley with 153 yards rushing in 22 carries.

Manu Tanielu rushed for 119 yards in 19 carries for Estancia (1-4).

* Capistrano Valley Christian 47, Southern California Christian 6: Dustin Smith and Ryan Allen combined for 248 yards rushing in Capistrano Valley Christian’s victory at Orange.

Smith rushed for 134 yards in 16 carries and scored a touchdown, and Allen rushed for 114 yards in seven carries and scored two touchdowns rushing and one receiving for CVC (3-2, 2-0).

Corey Wright’s 80-yard interception return gave CVC a 7-0 lead in the opening quarter. Smith scored on a five-yard run, Allen scored on 12-yard pass from Jason Ward and Allen returned a punt 70 yards to give CVC a 27-0 halftime lead.

Allen scored his third touchdown on a 36-yard run in the third quarter and teammate Thomas Grove followed with a 25-yard run in the fourth.

SCC (0-4, 0-2) scored on Mike Bejack’s 35-yard touchdown reception from Andrew St. Clair.

Strand’s Passing Leads El Toro Over Laguna Hills

Mike Strand threw for 269 yards and four touchdowns to lead El Toro past Laguna Hills, 38-12, at Mission Viejo High.

After Laguna Hills (2-3) took a 6-0 lead on Nema Nowzari’s three-yard touchdown run with 8 minutes 6 seconds remaining in the first quarter, Strand hit J.P. Lonne with a 14-yard touchdown pass 2 1/2 minutes later.

After a 26-yard field goal by the Chargers (2-3) in the opening seconds of the second quarter, El Toro’s Ryan Switzer, who rushed for 177 yards in 26 carries, scored on a 48-yard run to give his team a 17-6 lead.

Laguna Hills countered with an 11-yard touchdown run by Ryan Johnson, but Strand hit Switzer with a 71-yard touchdown pass later in the second quarter to put the Chargers up, 24-12, at the half.

* Orange Lutheran 42, Laguna Beach 14: Orange Lutheran quarterback Jason Whieldon, playing only in the first half, threw for a school-record 329 yards. He completed 12 of 16 passes.

Dee Meza scored four touchdowns, including the first three of the game, and Orange Lutheran (4-1) jumped to a 42-0 halftime lead. Meza scored on runs of one, four and 14 yards and also scored on a 36-yard interception return in the second quarter.

Whieldon hooked up with wide receiver Tim Flemming seven times for 214 yards and two scores, including a 54-yard touchdown pass. Laguna Beach is 1-4.

Burrell Twins Go Long to Pull It Out for Tustin

Mike Burrell caught an 83-yard touchdown pass from his twin brother Marcus with 3:40 to play to lift Tustin to a 24-20 victory over Temecula Valley.

The scoring play was the only pass Tustin completed in the game.

Tustin (2-3) took an 8-7 lead in the first quarter after Brandon Malcom scored on a two-yard run and a two-point conversion.

James Sargent scored on a two-yard run and Adam Tesche made a field goal to give Tustin a 17-14 halftime lead.

Temecula Valley (3-2) is ranked fourth in Division IV.
