Pregnant Forger Receives Transfer

A Japanese woman convicted of forgery was shuttled from one prison cell to another as her lawyers tried to persuade a Cleveland court to let her have an abortion. Yuriko Kawaguchi, 21, a former UC Berkeley student, was sentenced to six months in prison Tuesday after pleading guilty to a forgery charge involving credit cards. Common Pleas Judge Patricia Cleary said she was using the sentence to block Kawaguchi from having an abortion. After imposing the sentence, Cleary sent Kawaguchi back to the Cuyahoga County Jail.
