Fatal Chokehold Results in Prison

A former New York City police officer who used a fatal chokehold on a man whose football hit his patrol car was sentenced to 7 1/2 years in prison. Anthony Baez was playing touch football in the street in December 1994 when an errant ball struck Francis Livoti’s patrol car. The officer tried to stop the game, and Baez, 29, of Orlando, Fla., died in the ensuing struggle. The police department ruled Livoti used an illegal chokehold.
