Officers risked their lives Thursday to rescue a Hollywood woman who fell asleep in her apartment after trying to fix coffee and leaving on an unlit burner, police officials said.
The woman, whose name was withheld, was taken to Cedars-Sinai with smoke inhalation injuries after the 8 a.m. incident.
Los Angeles Police Department officers responded to a call from a neighbor who smelled gas and thought that the woman was attempting to commit suicide, said Lt. Jim Bower, of Hollywood Division.
“She turned on the stove to make some coffee . . . then fell asleep,” said Bower. “But [the burner] never fully ignited and she was overcome.”
Officers Michael Lopez, Corey Dillard and Margarita Sanders entered the woman’s apartment and pulled the unconscious woman to safety, Sgt. Steve Vinson said.
