School District Plans 15 New Magnet Centers
LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Unified School District plans to open 15 new magnet centers for the 1999-2000 school year, bringing the district total to 150.
Last year, about 70,000 youngsters applied for 13,000 seats in magnet schools, which offer such specialties as math, science, medicine and the arts.
District spokesman Shel Erlich said schools that will be hosting the new programs were selected mainly because of their available space.
