Explosion Destroys Apartments; 5 Hurt

An explosion and fire Sunday destroyed an Alhambra apartment building, injuring five people, and officials said they were investigating whether a bomb caused the blast.
The explosion in an eight-unit building in the 1300 block of South Freemont Avenue was reported at 5:09 p.m. Initially, callers said a car was on fire in front of the building, said Alhambra Fire Department spokeswoman Shari Miller. When firefighters arrived, however, the building was engulfed in flames, Miller said.
The extent of the injuries was unclear late Sunday.
It also was not known whether a car was involved in the fire, she said. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department dispatched its bomb squad to help investigate.
Red Cross officials were seeking shelter for 60 people displaced by the fire.
