No. 14 Tulane Goes on Road and Shows Army Who Is King

Shaun King threw for three touchdowns and ran for three as No. 14 Tulane remained unbeaten with a 49-35 victory over Army at West Point, N.Y., on Saturday.

King became the first Tulane quarterback to pass for 300 yards and run for 100 in a game. He finished with 332 yards on 23 of 31 passing, and gained 135 yards in 17 carries.

P.J. Franklin caught nine passes for 154 yards and a touchdown. JaJuan Dawson had eight receptions for 122 yards and two scores.

Tulane (9-0, 5-0 Conference USA) clinched at least a tie for its first conference title since 1949, when it was a member of the Southeastern Conference.

Defense was reduced to a rumor in a game in which the teams combined for 1,116 yards. Although not known for a prolific offense, Army traded touchdowns with a Tulane team ranked No. 2 in the nation in scoring (42.4 points a game). Craig Stucker scored twice for Army (2-7, 2-3), and quarterback Johnny Goff tossed a touchdown and rushed for 148 yards in 19 carries.

Tulane took control after the game’s only turnover. The Green Wave led, 35-28, in the third quarter when defensive back Sam Knight pounced on a bad pitch by Goff at the Army 14. Tulane took a 42-28 lead when King connected with Dawson on a 12-yard scoring pass.

After Stucker’s second score cut the lead to 42-35 in the fourth quarter, Army drove to the Tulane 24 with about 5 1/2 minutes remaining. But Goff’s fourth-down pass to Gary Williams was knocked away by Michael Jordan.

The Green Wave secured the victory on King’s 20-yard run.

EAST

Donovan McNabb passed 13 yards to Stephen Brominski on the last play of the game, giving Syracuse a stunning 28-26 victory over No. 16 Virginia Tech (7-2, 4-2 in Big East) at Syracuse, N.Y. If the Orangemen (6-3, 4-1) win their remaining games against Temple and No. 24 Miami, they would clinch a third consecutive Big East title and earn a trip to the Orange or Sugar bowls. . . . Edgerrin James ran for 137 yards and three scores and No. 24 Miami (6-2, 4-1) took advantage of mistake-prone Temple (2-8, 2-4) in a 42-7 victory at Philadelphia. . . . Amos Zereoue ran for 228 yards, scored a touchdown and set up a game-clinching, fourth-quarter score with a long run in leading West Virginia to a 28-14 victory over Rutgers at Piscataway, N.J. Marc Bulger added two touchdown passes and the Mountaineers (6-3, 3-2) forced four turnovers and sacked Scarlet Knight quarterback Mike McMahon five times in beating Rutgers (5-5, 2-4) for the fourth time in a row. . . . Mike Cloud broke the Big East season rushing record with his ninth 100-yard game and Scott Mutryn passed for two touchdowns in Boston College’s 23-15 victory over mistake-riddled Pittsburgh. Cloud carried 37 times for 179 yards, including a nine-yard scoring run, as the Eagles (4-6, 3-3) ended a six-game losing streak and dealt host Pittsburgh (2-7, 0-5) its fifth consecutive loss.

Yale quarterback Joe Walland connected with Jake Fuller with a 76-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter, and the Bulldogs (5-4, 4-2) held off a late charge from Princeton (4-5, 3-3) to preserve a 31-28 Ivy League victory at New Haven, Conn. . . . Matt Rader passed for 260 yards and two touchdowns and Jim Finn gained 106 yards and scored three times as Penn (7-2, 5-1) defeated Harvard (4-5, 3-3), 41-10, at Philadelphia. The victory guaranteed Penn at least a tie for the Ivy League championship. . . . James Perry’s 24-yard touchdown pass to Zach Burns with five seconds remaining lifted Brown (6-3, 4-2) to a 28-21 victory over Dartmouth (2-7, 1-5) at Providence, R.I. . . . Free safety Chris Tillotson returned a fumble 70 yards for a touchdown and intercepted two passes as Columbia (4-5, 3-3) rallied and defeated Cornell (4-5, 1-5), 22-10, at New York.

SOUTH

Mario Edwards rescued sloppy Florida State with a school-record four interceptions and the fifth-ranked Seminoles (10-1, 7-1) claimed at least a share of another Atlantic Coast Conference title with a 24-7 victory over Wake Forest (3-7, 2-6) at Winston-Salem, N.C.

Thomas Jones, the ACC’s leading rusher, ran for 180 yards and a touchdown and to spark No. 21 Virginia (8-2, 6-2) past North Carolina (4-5, 3-3) at Charlottesville, Va. . . . Randall Jones threw for two touchdowns and ran for one as Maryland (3-7, 1-6 in the ACC) defeated Duke (4-6, 2-5), 42-25, at Durham, N.C.

Chris Redman completed a Conference USA record 44 of 56 passes for a school-record 592 yards and a league-record six touchdowns in Louisville’s 63-45 victory over East Carolina at Greenville, N.C. The Cardinals are 6-4 overall and 3-2 in the conference. The Pirates are 5-5 and 2-3. . . . Daunte Culpepper passed for 327 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another to lift Central Florida (8-2) to a 37-14 victory over Ball State (1-9) at Orlando, Fla. . . . Southern Mississippi (6-4, 5-1 Conference USA) trailed, 3-0, but roared back to defeat Memphis (2-8, 1-4), 45-3, at Hattiesburg, Miss.

MIDWEST

Todd France’s 29-yard field goal on the final play lifted host Toledo to a 17-14 victory over Central Michigan (5-5, 4-3), clinching the Rockets’ second consecutive Mid-American Conference West division title. Toledo (7-3, 6-1) will play East champion Marshall in the MAC championship game Dec. 4 at Marshall Stadium in Huntington, W.Va. . . . Travis Prentice rushed for 197 yards and scored five touchdowns as Miami of Ohio 9-1, 6-1) kept Kent State (0-10, 0-7) winless with a 56-0 victory at Oxford, Ohio. . . . Freshman DeMarco McCleskey ran for four touchdowns, the last with 1:01 to play, to rally Cincinnati (1-9, 1-5) past Houston (3-7, 2-3), 44-43, at Cincinnati. . . . Tim Lester accounted for five touchdowns and passed for a school-record 435 yards, pacing Western Michigan (7-4, 5-3) to a 56-27 victory over Bowling Green (4-6, 4-3) at Kalamazoo, Mich. . . . Zac Derr kicked a 26-yard field goal on the final play to complete a comeback from an 18-point deficit as host Akron (4-6) defeated Eastern Michigan (2-8), 24-21.

Blane Morgan passed for 91 yards and a touchdown as No. 23 Air Force (9-1, 6-1) took control of the Western Athletic Conference’s Mountain Division with a 10-3 victory over No. 25 Wyoming (8-2, 6-1) at Laramie, Wyo. The Falcons’ victory snapped the Cowboys’ seven-game win streak. . . . Utah (7-3, 5-2) scored two touchdowns within 55 seconds in the first quarter, blocked a punt and forced six New Mexico (3-8, 1-7) turnovers in a 41-7 victory at Albuquerque. . . . Brian Russell threw for 219 yards and ran for three touchdowns as San Diego State (6-4, 6-1) defeated San Jose State (4-7, 3-4), 34-6, at San Jose. . . . Jamie Kimbrough rushed for 144 yards and two touchdowns to lead Fresno State (4-6, 4-3) to a 51-12 victory against Hawaii (0-10, 0-8) at Fresno. The Rainbow Warriors have lost 16 consecutive games and 24 conference road games in a row.

Sophomore Ronnie Jenkins rushed for 176 yards in 21 carries to lead Brigham Young to a 31-14 victory over Texas El Paso (3-7, 3-4) at El Paso, Texas. The win kept the Cougars (8-3, 6-1) tied with San Diego State for the lead in the WAC Pacific division. . . . Derek Franz kicked four field goals and Colorado State’s defense forced six turnovers in a 32-10 victory over Southern Methodist (4-7, 4-4) at Dallas. The Rams (8-4, 5-3) held SMU to 202 yards, including only 77 in the second half. . . . LaDainian Tomlinson rushed for 165 yards and a touchdown as Texas Christian (5-5, 3-4) defeated Tulsa, 17-7, at Tulsa. The Golden Hurricane (3-7, 1-6) have lose seven of eight. . . . Rice linebacker Dan Dawson tied an NCAA record with a 100-yard fumble return, highlighting the Owls’ 38-16 victory over Nevada Las Vegas (0-10, 0-7) at Houston. Rice is 5-5 and 5-3 and the Rebels have lost 16 games in a row. . . . Brad Bohn kicked a 30-yard field goal--his fifth of the game--with five seconds left to give Utah State (3-8, 2-3) a 28-27 Big West Conference victory over North Texas (2-8, 2-2) at Logan, Utah. . . . Cal State Northridge freshman quarterback Marcus Brady completed 34 of 40 passes for a career-high 466 yards and four touchdowns in leading the Matadors (7-3) to a 42-38 nonconference victory over Southwest Missouri State (5-5) at Springfield, Mo. . . . David Neill passed for 407 yards and five touchdowns and ran for a sixth score to lead Nevada (6-4) to a 63-0 victory against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (2-8) at Reno, Nev. . . . Brandin Young set a school rushing record with 250 yards as St. Mary’s (2-8) beat Chapman (3-6), 27-10, at Moraga, Calif.
