Fire Damages Building On City’s Main Street

VENTURA — A morning blaze gutted a downtown salon and severely damaged three surrounding businesses in a historic stretch of Main Street Wednesday.
Dozens of residents stopped on the soot-strewn streets along the 400 block of East Main Street to watch the flames that engulfed Michael Kelley Eco Salon and Day Spa, situated just above Joannafina’s Mexican Cafe, Ventura County Business Machines and the Book Mall of Ventura. The fire caused an estimated $1.4 million in damage.
About 60 firefighters were called to douse the flames in hopes of containing the damage before it spread into buildings that line the city’s main avenue.
The fire began about 9 a.m. when many of the stores were just opening. Firefighters said the blaze may have started in the kitchen of Joannafina’s and quickly spread through a vent to an attic.
