Staying Power

If USC and UCLA are fair indications, fullbacks are homebodies who don’t mind sharing. Valley products Ted Iacenda of Hart High and Marvin Powell of Birmingham split playing time at fullback for the Trojans, and Durell Price of Sylmar and Craig Walendy of Westlake do the same for the Bruins.

Fargas Fuels Up

The most prominent high school player from the Valley last year was Justin Fargas, above, an All-American running back from Notre Dame High who spurned UCLA and USC and is attending Michigan. He came off the bench against Northwestern to rush for 120 yards two weeks ago, earning a start against Indiana.

Long Distance

Former Hart High quarterback David Neill first made headlines at Nevada by passing for an NCAA freshman record 611 yards Oct. 10, then gained negative publicity for being suspended for one game for using a stolen phone credit card. Neill showed no rust upon his return Oct. 24, passing for 480 yards and five scores.

Feet Don’t Fail

Oregon State’s Jose Cortez of Van Nuys, who booted field goals of 52, 42 and 22 yards against Stanford a few weeks ago, is one of three Pacific-10 Conference kickers from the Valley. Chris Sailor of Notre Dame does the kicking and punting for UCLA and Ignacio Brache of Village Christian kicks for Cal.
