Using the North Hollywood bank robbery shootout as a backdrop for Mayor Richard Riordan’s endorsement of Bill Lockyer for attorney general (Oct. 21) typifies the thinking of those who call for a ban on “assault weapons.” The robbers in that situation used fully automatic rifles, ignoring the California law that has for decades made possession of such weapons a felony. However, gun control advocates, in their characteristically illogical manner, cite the very incident that most graphically illustrates the failure of such laws to urge the passage of others.
