Former Times Editor Expected to Get ABC News Post

Shelby Coffey III, former editor of the Los Angeles Times, is expected next week to be named to a senior position at ABC News.

An announcement about Coffey is likely at the annual meeting of the network and its affiliates in Orlando, Fla., an ABC News official confirmed Friday.

The official would not describe the job, but The Times has reported previously that the position would involve overseeing business development and formulating editorial policy.

The Washington Post reported today that the job might also involve cable programming development, online services, international operations and editorial quality.

ABC is reviewing new opportunities in its news division pertaining to the Internet as well as producing programming for cable networks in which it has an ownership stake. Those networks include the Lifetime and A&E; channels.

Coffey, who resigned as editor of The Times last year, could not be reached late Friday for comment.

Word of his likely appointment comes as ABC News Chairman Roone Arledge is yielding daily oversight of that division to David Westin, who has been division president. (See related story in today’s Calendar section.)

It is expected that Coffey will report to Westin.
