Heat, Dry Conditions Fuel Forest Fire Fears

With a lack of rain and record heat, state fire managers are worried that a mammoth blaze could engulf hundreds of thousands of forest acres--and countless homes. More than 1,000 acres have burned in or near Apalachicola National Forest, a 600,000-acre spread about 20 miles from Tallahassee. A new fire that broke out added more than 500 acres to the toll.
