Three Area Schools Well Represented

The women’s tennis teams at UCLA and Pepperdine have qualified for the NCAA championships, which begin today at South Bend, Ind.
The two schools, along with USC, also have qualified for the men’s NCAA championships, which begin Saturday at Athens, Ga. Ninth-ranked Pepperdine and No. 10 UCLA won regional finals last weekend, and No. 7 USC won an automatic berth.
The 14th-ranked Bruin women (17-10) advanced to the national championships by defeating Notre Dame, 5-1, in the Midwest regional final at Champaign, Ill., last weekend, and the Bruin men (16-7) beat Washington, 4-2, in the Region VIII final at UCLA.
The Pepperdine women, 13-5 and ranked 12th, beat USC, 5-1, in the West regional final at Malibu last weekend, and the Pepperdine men (26-5) won the Region VII final at Malibu by 4-1 over New Mexico.
The Pepperdine men will open play Saturday against USC (17-6).
Seven-time national champion USC did not qualify as a team for the women’s NCAA championships but will have three players competing for individual honors.
