MOSCOW — A gunman killed four people in the mountains outside Grozny, the capital of Chechnya, including a senior security official and the region’s former foreign minister, Russian news agencies reported Saturday.
The gunman entered the home of First Deputy Security Minister Shamsudi Uvaisayav late Friday night and killed him, former Chechen Foreign Minister Ruslan Chimayev and two bodyguards, the reports said.
They quoted another deputy security minister, Abu Movsayev, as saying the gunman was a 30-year-old local resident. Police were searching for him in the mountains 30 miles south of Grozny.
Russian RTR television said Uvaisayav was the chief investigator into the kidnapping of President Boris N. Yeltsin’s envoy to Chechnya and that Chimayev had been the envoy’s bodyguard.
