Agoura Can’t Slam Door, Camarillo Wins

Camarillo High kept its playoff hopes alive Wednesday when Eric Foster hit a two-out, run-scoring single in the sixth inning to give the Scorpions an 8-7 victory over Agoura in a Marmonte League baseball game at Camarillo.
Camarillo (18-7, 8-5 in league play) blew a seven-run lead in the top of the sixth when Matt Bernstein hit a grand slam, and Jeff Gould and Mike Falco had run-scoring doubles for Agoura (14-10-1, 5-7-1).
Geoff Abbott (7-1) recorded the final out of the sixth after surrendering Falco’s game-tying double.
Catcher Joe Yingling of Camarillo threw out three baserunners, earned his third save and drove in three runs with three hits.
Simi Valley 9, Newbury Park 7--Jason Smith hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning to give the Pioneers a Marmonte League victory at Newbury Park.
Scott Vermette hit a grand slam in the first inning for Simi Valley (14-10, 7-6), which trailed, 7-6, going into the seventh.
Danny Greene and Ryan Ayers hit two-run homers for Newbury Park (10-13, 3-10).
Westlake 10, Channel Islands 6--Doug Hutton doubled and singled for the Warriors (14-10, 8-5) and Garrett Michaels hit a solo home run in a Marmonte League victory at Channel Islands.
Michael Nickeas doubled and scored for Westlake, which is tied for third with Camarillo.
Jared Krehbiel had a two-run home run and a run-scoring single for the Raiders (7-16-1, 3-11).
Nordhoff 9, Santa Clara 6--Dan Carlton hit a two-run double in the ninth inning of a Frontier League game at Santa Clara.
Terrance Dotsy and Danny Chaparro had three hits each for Santa Clara (9-10, 6-8).
SOFTBALL
Rio Mesa 2, Oxnard 0--Rhianna Rogers drove in both runs for the Spartans, who clinched a tie for their first Channel League title at Rio Mesa.
Rogers hit a run-scoring double in the first and a run-scoring single in the third for Rio Mesa (19-5, 12-0), which leads Dos Pueblos by two games with two left.
Hart 1, Burroughs 0--Jocelyn Evans scored on a seventh-inning error in a Foothill League game at William S. Hart Complex.
With the bases loaded, Kortney Downen’s grounder handcuffed shortstop Shaland Romero.
Burroughs (15-7, 3-5) stranded runners at second and third in the top of the seventh.
Amanda Fortune allowed three hits, struck out 10 batters and walked one for Hart (18-6, 7-1).
Thousand Oaks 5, Royal 0--Colleen Spencer had three hits and scored twice for the Lancers (16-7-1, 9-4) in a Marmonte League game at Rancho Simi Community Park.
L.A. Lutheran 13, First Lutheran 1--Michelle Johnson had two hits and four RBIs for the Lions (14-3, 8-1) in a Heritage League game called after five innings because of the 10-run rule at L.A. Lutheran.
BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
Saugus d. Righetti, 15-3, 11-15, 16-14, 15-11--Matt Bradley had 14 kills and four aces and Brett Archie had 13 kills for Saugus (14-1) in a Southern Section Division I wild-card match at Saugus. The Centurions play at Royal in a first-round match Friday.
