Ex-Citadel Cadet Settles Hazing Suit

One of the first women to attend The Citadel military college, who dropped out over alleged hazing, has settled a lawsuit against six cadets. Kim Messer, who alleged that she was physically and mentally abused at the Charleston, S.C., school in 1996, settled with five of the cadets for $33,750. Settlement terms with the sixth cadet were not disclosed. The Citadel will contribute $15,000 to the settlement in return for Messer’s guarantee not to sue it, attorneys said. The six cadets were either expelled or suspended.
