Starr Forced Search of White House in ’96

A lawyer scoured the White House residential quarters in 1996, including the first family’s underwear drawers, as part of a compromise to head off a search warrant, the New Yorker said. The search followed the Jan. 4, 1996, discovery of First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton’s billing records for work on behalf of Madison Guaranty Savings & Loan. The White House learned that Whitewater independent counsel Kenneth W. Starr wanted a search warrant for the living quarters to look for documents related to the Rose Law Firm of Little Rock, Ark. A compromise was reached, and Jane Sherburne of the White House counsel’s office searched the area top to bottom, including Chelsea Clinton’s room.
