Quarter Horse Jockey Lewis Remains in a Coma After Fall

Quarter horse jockey Jim Lewis remained in a coma Wednesday with severe head injuries after being thrown from his mount during training exercises Monday at Galway Downs in Temecula.
A spokesperson at Loma Linda University Medical Center said Lewis, 40, was brought to the center shortly after the accident and was listed in critical condition.
Trainer Jamie Gomez said Lewis’ wife, trainer Kelly Long, told him Lewis was resting more comfortably and appeared to be breathing easier Wednesday.
According to Gomez, who was at Galway Downs but did not see the spill, the horse that Lewis was riding apparently became spooked during a workout and turned into the rail, tossing Lewis into the infield.
Lewis, a resident of La Palma, finished tied for fifth in the jockey standings at Los Alamitos Race Course last season with 65 victories.
