The body of a newborn girl was found in a trash container in the Olvera Street Plaza area near downtown Los Angeles, and authorities sought the public’s help Wednesday to find the mother.
Five adults, who were scavenging through trash bins looking for items to recycle, discovered the baby wrapped in a plastic bag about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday and notified authorities, said Los Angeles Police Department spokesman Mike Partain.
“This is shocking and tragic,” Partain said, adding that the baby appeared to be full term. “Whoever did this must be confused and desperate.”
The death was being investigated by detectives from the LAPD Juvenile Division’s Abused Child Unit. Anyone with information is urged to call police at (213) 485-2504.
