Led Eagles to a second straight Division III title with three playoff shutouts, highlighted by a 10-save effort against Servite in the semifinals. The SMU-bound Foss had 14 shutouts and a 0.60 goals-against average.

DANNY CALIFF

Defender

Orange, Sr.

Named to the Parade All-America team and to The Times first team for a second consecutive season, Califf was a force in the back for the Panthers. The three-time All-Century League selection signed with Maryland.

KEVIN FRIEDLAND

Defender

Woodbridge, Jr.

Maybe the most acrobatic defender in the county, Friedland, a first-team All-Sea View League pick, usually marked the opposing team’s top scorer. He helped the Warriors register a county-high 18 shutouts.

CHRIS LATINI

Defender

Capistrano Valley, Sr.

Was one of the big reasons Capistrano Valley won 24 games and was seeded second in the Division I playoffs. Latini scored five goals, had four assists and was a first-team All-South Coast League pick.

BRYAN DOI

Midfielder

Laguna Hills, Sr.

Will join Foss at SMU next season. Doi scored nine goals and had six assists for the Hawks. For second consecutive year he was a first-team All-Pacific Coast League and All-Southern Section Division III selection.

RYAN FUTAGAKI

Midfielder

Fountain Valley, Sr.

A four-time All-Sunset League selection, Futagaki scored 12 goals and had eight assists despite missing several games because of national team duties. The UCLA-bound Futagaki was a first-team pick last year.

BEAU LAWSON

Midfielder

Sunny Hills, Sr.

The Freeway League’s MVP, Lawson scored 10 goals and had nine assists for the Division II runner-up Lancers. His physical play in the section final neutralized Santa Barbara San Marcos’ size advantage.

JOSE RETIZ

Midfielder

Saddleback, Sr.

Retiz’s skillful play enabled Serna to score many of his 45 goals. Retiz scored 10 goals and had 15 assists himself and was named first-team All-Golden West League for the second consecutive season.

RYAN JOHNSON

Forward

Laguna Hills, Jr.

Despite missing nine games, he scored 22 goals for the Hawks, who were seeded second in the Division III playoffs. Johnson, the Pacific Coast League’s MVP, was also a first-team All-Division III selection.

TIM PIERCE

Forward

Santa Margarita, Sr.

Pierce, who recently signed with defending NCAA champion UCLA, had 22 goals and 15 assists in his final season. His biggest goal came in overtime of the Eagles’ 1-0 victory over Servite in Division III semifinals.

TOMAS SERNA

Forward

Saddleback, Sr.

Scored an astounding 45 goals this season, which is ninth most in Southern Section history. Had three five-goal games and scored four goals in three victories for Saddleback over archrival Santa Ana.

Sunny Hills

Schade guided the Lancers to nine consecutive victories and into the Division II finals after a 6-10-3 start. In its playoff run, Sunny Hills toppled fourth-seeded Woodbridge and top-seeded Riverside Poly.

THE SECOND TEAM

Kevin Mehrens, Goalkeeper

San Clemente, Sr.

The South Coast League MVP, Mehrens finished his outstanding career with 36 shutouts. He has signed with UC Irvine.

Mario Gonzalez, Defender

Santa Ana, Sr.

Named the Golden West’s defensive player of the year a second straight time, Gonzalez was also the Saints’ main offensive threat.

Matt Ledford, Defender

Foothill, Sr.

A first-team All-Southern Section Division II selection, Ledford scored four goals and had four assists for the defensive-minded Knights.

Shaun MacGillvray, Defender

Laguna Beach, Sr.

Was the Artists’ best one-on-one defender. Helped lead Laguna Beach to its second consecutive Division IV title.

Keith Buckley, Midfielder

Servite, Sr.

Helped lead the Friars into the Division III semifinals with 15 goals, including three in the playoffs, and 13 assists.

Ryan Coiner, Midfielder

Santa Margarita, Sr.

Scored 14 goals and had 10 assists. Combined with Pierce to give the Division III champion Eagles a powerful one-two scoring attack.

Aaron Colacion, Midfielder

Esperanza, Jr.

The Sunset League offensive MVP, Colacion scored 14 goals and had 13 assists for the league-champion Aztecs.

Ryan Kenyon, Midfielder

El Toro, Sr.

A first-team All-Southern Section pick, Kenyon scored eight goals and had eight assists for the Division I runner-up.

Aaron McAthy, Forward

Huntington Beach, Sr.

An All-Sunset League first-team pick for a second consecutive year, McAthy had 19 goals and 11 assists.

Fernando Rico, Forward

Santa Ana Valley, Sr.

The Century’s MVP, Rico scored 16 goals and had 10 assists for league-champion Santa Ana Valley.

Matt Terry, Forward

Servite, Jr.

Scored a team-leading 24 goals and had five assists for the Friars, who had their best season in 14 years.
