U.S. Threatens Suit to Protect Bird Habitat

Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt threatened to sue the State of Florida if it chooses to flood an endangered sparrow’s habitat rather than a housing subdivision. Babbitt made his remarks before the North American Wildlife and Natural Resources Conference in Orlando. The Cape Sable seaside sparrow, which nests in Everglades National Park, has declined in numbers 90%, to 3,900, since 1980, government figures show.
