Re March 12 article on Big Sur’s isolation:
Who are these “pioneers” kidding? In this disaster, as always, they are being rescued and sustained by taxpayers who live in less idyllic places. The agencies giving these pioneers special services includes the post office, Caltrans, National Guard helicopters, the school system and relief agencies. And soon it will be fire season and they will need rescuing big time.
Who do they think they are fooling calling themselves “self-sustainers”? We are all dependent on government, but residents of rugged areas are more dependent than most of us. I can understand the resident who says he loves the peace and quiet and says I would find it was worth it if I could see the sunset from his house. He should understand who is paying to keep him there.
