Titans’ Coughran Finishes Eighth at NCAA Wrestling

Cal State Fullerton’s Joey Coughran lost a 5-4 decision to Carl Perry of Illinois to finish eighth in the 126-pound class at the NCAA wrestling championships Saturday at Cleveland.
Coughran defeated Rob Loper of Pittsburgh, 5-4, on a tiebreaker, and lost to Jason Buce of Oregon State, 4-1, in consolation matches late Friday to drop into Saturday’s seventh-place match.
Coughran was the lone Titan to advance to Saturday’s finals. Sean Kim dropped a 9-2 decision to Tim Dernlan of Purdue at 118 pounds in a consolation quarterfinal late Friday. Cal State Fullerton finished in a tie for 30th place, with 12 points.
David Wells, a 158-pounder at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo who competed at El Modena, placed seventh by defeating Eric Douglas of Purdue, 6-0. He defeated Sam Kline of West Virginia, 1-0, in a consolation quarterfinal Friday before being pinned by John Lange of Penn State at 6:48 in a semifinal.
Two former Calvary Chapel standouts were eliminated in consolation quarterfinal matches Friday night. Shane Valdez of Oklahoma lost, 7-4, to Brandon Paulson of Minnesota at 118 pounds and Ed Mosley of Harvard dropped a 7-4 decision to Casey Strand of Arizona State at 167 pounds.
In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:
Southern California College 4-5, Biola 3-8--Bryce Primm went the distance in the first game, giving up nine hits, walking three and striking out three for SCC.
In the Redlands softball tournament:
Concordia 5, Redlands 4 (8)--Concordia scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to win the third-place game. Jana Padilla pitched a six-hitter for the Eagles (13-9-1).
Lia Matsumura, Crystal Rosenthal and Michelle Lara each had two hits for Concordia.
The Eagles lost, 13-0, to San Diego in the semifinals. San Diego won the tournament by defeating George Fox in the championship game, 7-0.
In the Sun West softball tournament;
Chapman 2, CS San Bernardino 1--Jessamine Maiben and Stephanie Carew each had RBI singles in the victory. Pitcher Linsey Buendia pitched a three-hitter for the Panthers.
Chapman (18-2) also defeated Carleton (Minn.) in five innings, 9-0. Carew hit a grand slam and Katie Smithson pitched a two-hitter.
In the Panthers’ final game of the day, Amie Barnes and Lacee Rashi each had three hits as Chapman defeated Cal Lutheran in six innings, 10-2. Catie Lacy had a three-run homer for Chapman.
In nonconference softball:
Azusa Pacific 6-6, Pacific Christian 1-3--Kerry Martin pitched a one-hitter in the first game of a doubleheader sweep for Azusa Pacific (15-13). Martin improved her record to 9-4.
Leslie Williams hit a first-inning home run in each of the games for Pacific Christian (16-10).
In nonconference women’s tennis:
CS Fullerton 9, Idaho State 0--Amy Medlin, Debbie Vonusa, Brooke Lacey, Katy Jennings, Laurel McLatcher and Liz Larson swept in singles and doubles for the Titans (8-8).
In nonconference track and field:
UC Irvine women place fourth--Kristine Bostick finished second in the 400-meter hurdles (1:01.75) and fourth in the 100 hurdles (15.32) for the Anteaters.
Brian Karpman took second in the men’s 800 (1:54.19) for the Anteaters.
