Van Nuys Rushes by Sylmar in Five

Van Nuys High rallied from deficits of 14-4 and 9-1 to win the last two games and defeat Sylmar in a Valley Pac-8 Conference boys’ volleyball match Friday at Sylmar, 15-13, 12-15, 12-15, 16-14, 15-13.
Ioannis Avramis had 18 kills and 13 blocks, and Jun-Ho Kim and Wylie Chung each added 11 kills for Van Nuys (4-1, 2-0 in conference play).
In other volleyball matches:
Poly d. Reseda, 15-4, 15-10, 15-5--Gilbert Ramos had 13 kills for Poly (4-1, 2-0) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference home match.
Newbury Park d. Westlake, 15-2, 15-5, 15-8--Collin McKeown had 13 kills for Newbury Park (4-1, 4-0) in a Marmonte League match at Westlake.
BOYS’ TENNIS
Newbury Park 16, Channel Islands 2--The No. 1 doubles team of John Lin and Shad Agel lost only one game in their three matches for Newbury Park (3-4, 1-2) in a Marmonte League home match.
Notre Dame 12, St. Francis 6--The No. 1 doubles team of Nikos Gutrugianios and Mike Choi won their three matches for Notre Dame (2-2-1, 2-1) in a Mission League match at Fremont Park in Glendale.
Agoura 10, Thousand Oaks 8--Steve Moses and Amir Nejad swept at No. 1 doubles, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2, for host Agoura (7-1, 5-0) in a Marmonte League match.
BOYS’ TRACK
El Camino Real 72, Cleveland 55--Quincy Wright of El Camino Real won the 100 meters in a wind-aided 10.6 seconds and the 220-yard dash in 21.9 for the Conquistadores (2-0, 2-0) in the Northwest Valley Conference meet at Cleveland.
GIRLS’ TRACK
Taft 89, Granada Hills 34--Frances Santin won three events for Taft (2-0, 2-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference meet at Granada Hills, clocking 15.5 in the 100-meter high hurdles and 45.5 in the 330-yard intermediate hurdles and leaping 5-0 in the high jump.
COLLEGE SOFTBALL
CS Northridge 2, Nevada Las Vegas 0--Tara Glaister pitched a two-hitter for the Matadors (15-10-1) in the Fullerton tournament.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
San Diego 6, Pepperdine 5--Tony Betancourt struck out but reached base on a passed ball, and then scored on Marty Hayes’ double in the 14th inning to give the Toreros (14-16, 4-3) a West Coast Conference victory at Pepperdine (15-12-1, 6-1).
HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL
Burroughs 4, Providence 0--Emily Brower (1-0) threw a no-hitter and struck out nine in her first start, and Chantel Jimenez had a home run and a three-run single for Burroughs (7-2) in a nonleague game at Olive Park.
Calabasas 7, Malibu 0--Sophomore pitcher Amy Rosson (3-3) pitched a two-hitter, striking out 10 and walking one for host Calabasas (5-3, 1-0) in a Frontier League opener.
Rio Mesa 2, San Marcos 1--Erin Yasutake had a run-scoring single and Kiara Cochran a run-scoring double in the third inning for Rio Mesa (4-1, 1-0) in a Channel League game at Rio Mesa.
El Camino Real 8, Glendale 0--Sophomore Stephanie Frasco pitched a no-hitter for El Camino Real (7-1), striking out five and walking one in a Hart tournament consolation game.
Bishop Amat 5, Hoover 3--Cori Herbert (4-2) struck out eight and walked five, scattering seven hits while her Hoover teammates committed four errors that led to three unearned runs in the Hoover tournament final.
Moorpark 11, Santa Clara 0--Erin Heinbechner pitched a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts and Cori Fredette had three hits and a run batted in for Moorpark (1-1, 1-0) in a Frontier League game at Santa Clara.
