Health Fair Targets Low-Income Families

Children’s Community School will host a free health fair today for low-income San Fernando Valley residents.

The fair, sponsored by Los Angeles City Councilwoman Cindy Miscikowski and Kaiser Permanente, will include services and information in English and Spanish, organizers said.

Included will be blood-pressure testing, immunizations, diabetes screening and HIV testing.

Women may sign up for free mammography appointments.

A free breakfast will be offered complimentary toothbrushes will be handed out.

Mothers will be able to enroll in the Women, Infant & Children program, which provides free milk, cereal, juices, eggs and cheese to needy children age 6 or younger.

Information about disaster preparedness, bicycle safety, legal aid and peer counseling for adolescents will be available, officials said.

Several businesses, including Western Bagels, El Pollo Loco, Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream and Whole Foods Markets have donated food for the event, organizers said.

“There’s a real need for these services in the area . . .,” said Cheryl Weaver, an aide to Miscikowski.

The fair runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the school, 14702 Sylvan St., Van Nuys.
