Orange Coast College will dedicate its new, $2.8-million Harry and Grace Steele Children’s Center on April 23.
The event and open house will be from 2 to 5 p.m. at the center, on the southern edge of campus near Merrimac Way.
The 13,000-square-foot center will serve children of OCC students ranging from 6 months to 6 years old for day care, and ages 5 to 12 for after-school and summer care.
With unique architectural features, the center features a “village” of six cottage-style classrooms situated around a main kitchen.
The college’s Associated Students kicked off a fund-raising drive three years ago with a $1.1-million donation, and the rest of the money was raised through private gifts.
Established in 1969, the Children’s Center has used a series of trailers and surplus buildings.
“The center has been a lifeline for many low-income students who are the parents of small children,” said director Lucy Groetsch.
