Oxnard Handles Late Hancock Power Surge

Oxnard College survived three home runs by Hancock in the ninth inning for a 7-6 victory on Thursday in a Western State Conference North Division baseball game at Hancock.
Carlos Morales (3-2) gave up three runs--including consecutive solo homers--and Pat Youngern yielded a two-run home run to Tony Castleberry, from Chaminade High, before ending the game on a strikeout and fly ball.
Oxnard (15-4, 8-1 in WSC play) broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth on a two-run home run by Kevin Mellinger. Brent Egan also hit a home run for Oxnard.
In another baseball game:
Pierce 8, Valley 6--Matt Rutter hit a two-run pinch double to give the Brahmas (9-11, 5-6) a 7-6 lead in the eighth inning of a WSC South Division game at Pierce.
Seth Barkley had three hits and three runs batted in, including his fifth home run to give Pierce a 4-3 lead in the fifth.
SOFTBALL
Pierce 5, Canyons 2--Tammy Wilhite had three hits and drove in two runs for the Brahmas in a WSC victory at Pierce.
Jessica Leivo (6-6) pitched a five-hitter for Pierce (8-6, 1-1).
Valley 9, Glendale 1--Bonnie Lehigh (8-3-1) pitched a two-hitter for the Monarchs (10-5-1, 1-1) in a WSC victory at Glendale.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
CS Northridge 5, Rutgers 4--The No. 1 doubles team of Birgit Frankenberg and Nely Horowic rallied from a 7-6 deficit to beat Cynthia Coriat and Angelique Matuch of Rutgers, 9-7, and lift the Matadors at Cal State Northridge.
