City Approves Moratorium on New Self-Storage Facilities

Culver City has enacted a 180-day moratorium on self-storage facilities, saying they do not provide the city with enough revenue or jobs.
The council based its ban on Culver City’s general plan, which calls for attracting and retaining development that generates high revenues and employment prospects, said Mark Winogrond), director of community development.
In 1997, the four self-storage facilities in Culver City generated less than $10,000 in business and utility taxes in 1997, he said.
The council will decide whether to change the city’s zoning ordinances to limit or ban construction of the facilities, Winogrond said.
