In this Southern California Division II semifinal, Santa Margarita’s match-up zone defense will no doubt concentrate on senior guard Tyler Hoffman, who is averaging close to 20 points. Stauffer poses an inside threat, but with eight Santa Margarita players averaging between eight and 14 points, the Eagles look to have more depth. Redondo Union lost the Southern Section Division II-A final to top-seeded Compton Dominguez, 80-69. Should it triumph, Santa Margarita is expected to meet Dominguez in Saturday’s final at Pauley Pavilion. The last time Redondo Union reached the Southern California final, there were no state playoffs. That was in 1965, when Tyler Hoffman’s father, Paul, was the Seahawks’ shooting guard. Santa Margarita senior guard Craig Rice was outstanding in the Eagles’ 71-57 victory over Compton in the section Division II-AA title game. T.J. Williams, the Sea View League’s MVP, has been steady all season and Dekker McKeever, who has signed with Holy Cross, can dominate opponents under the basket. He should provide an interesting test for Stauffer.
