Marina (28-4) vs. Harbor City Narbonne (26-4)
7:30 TONIGHT NARBONNE HIGH
Narbonne is ranked sixth in the nation and No. 2 in the state, and is coming off a 61-47 victory over Long Beach Wilson in the first round of the Southern California playoffs. The Gauchos, the L.A. City Section champion, beat San Clemente at the Marina tournament in December, 42-39, in a game in which San Clemente missed its first 21 shots. When it came to pressure defense, Narbonne could dish it out but couldn’t take it; San Clemente hounded Narbonne into 28 turnovers. Marina, which beat the Tritons for the Southern Section Division I-A title, plays the same kind of defense as San Clemente, but is unlikely to miss its first 21 shots. The Vikings have their work cut out for them, though; the Gauchos start 5-11 forward Amber White (8.6 points) and 6-2 forward Ebony Hoffman (11.4 points, 9.5 rebounds). Reserve Portia Mitchell (10 points, 7.1 rebounds), who is 6-4, also contributes. That’s quite a height advantage against Marina’s primary rebounder, 5-11 Chanda McLeod (13.5 points, 9.8 rebounds). McLeod, who had a career-high 27-point effort Tuesday, is averaging 15 points and 12.3 rebounds in the playoffs. Point guard Natalie Nakase (13.8 points) is averaging 15.7 points in the playoffs, and Karyn Fierst (11.2 points) has made some clutch baskets in the playoffs.
