Forum to Discuss Creation of Separate School District

A grass-roots group of residents has scheduled a community forum tonight to discuss an effort underway to leave the Los Angeles Unified School District and create a Gardena Valley Unified School District.
Members of the group began circulating a petition about two weeks ago to collect the estimated 1,300 signatures needed for their petition to be considered. Officials hope to have enough signatures by the end of May.
“We want to be able to have more input, and hope that in leaving the district, we’ll be able to have synergy between the school and the community,” said Ruth Perez, an organizer of the effort.
The forum is scheduled for 7 p.m. at 1457 W. 179th St. Organizers plan to meet the second Thursday of each month.
