My Favorite Weekend

Renan Almendarez Coello, host of Southern California’s top-ranked morning radio show on Spanish-language station KSCA-FM (101.9)
Body Beautiful: I start every weekend at the gym. I run two to three miles every day around my neighborhood in Granada Hills, but I go to the gym on Friday nights to work my arms and legs. By the time I get home at 8:30 or 9, I’m too tired to do anything else but watch TV. I have a satellite dish so I watch from Mexico, usually TV Azteca.
Show Business: Saturday is a workday for me, beginning with my radio program at 6 a.m. When we get off the air at 10, I frequently have to make personal appearances or do a remote broadcast from somewhere. At night, I’ll go to see a movie at the Universal Studios multicinema or a concert if someone good is in town. I like Mexican regional music, which is the kind my station plays. But I never go to clubs and I don’t eat out too often. When we do eat out, I prefer Japanese food so we go to the Benihana of Tokyo in Encino.
Family Time: Sunday is definitely a family day. I get up early and watch futbol from Mexico on television, then in the afternoon we often go to Mass at Santa Elisabeth Catholic Church in Van Nuys. I work so much during the week, I leave the weekends for my wife Virginia and our three daughters, Irlanda, Italia and Francia.
Battery-Powered: I need the weekends to rest and recharge my batteries. My family’s busy too; my daughters have tap class, piano lessons, they’re studying karate, the accordion. So I’ll help them with that or with their homework.
