Wednesday is the deadline to register for summer lifeguard tryouts, set for Sunday.
The Fire and Marine Department is seeking 40 people to qualify for training. Officials said that 60 to 80 people try out each year.
Registration and waiver forms must be filed at Lifeguard Headquarters on Newport Pier no later than 5 p.m. Wednesday.
The tryouts will include a 1,000-meter swim, which must be completed in less than 20 minutes; and a 1,000-meter swim-run-swim. For those who qualify, training will be on weekend days in April and May. Any absence will result in disqualification, officials said.
The city will hire the top training candidates as needed for the summer. Between 20 and 25 candidates are hired each year at a starting pay of $10.76 an hour.
