‘Titanic’ Out-Maneuvers ‘Marshals’

“U.S. Marshals,” the sequel to 1993’s “The Fugitive,” couldn’t capture the No. 1 spot at the box office from “Titanic,” but it came as close as any film has since the soon-to-be box-office champ opened. James Cameron’s ocean epic cruised to its 12th week atop the charts, adding $17.6 million to its coffers for a total of $449.2 million. “U.S. Marshals,” starring Tommy Lee Jones, placed second with $16.9 million. Having already grossed $1 billion internationally, “Titanic” could pass “Star Wars” ($461 million) this week as the all-time domestic box-office champ.
Of the other new releases, the Paul Newman film noir “Twilight” was fourth at $5.9 million, followed by the Coen brothers’ “The Big Lebowski” in sixth place at $5.5 million.
* In limited release, “Love and Death on Long Island,” made $78,151 on six screens in New York and Los Angeles.
