A Fare Deal for Folks 50 or Over

Are you 50 or older and headed for London? A new program could save you 12% to 25% on air fares.
The American Assn. of Retired Persons now offers savings to members on Virgin Atlantic flights from the U.S. to London. The savings apply to advance-purchase economy fares and vary by date, a Virgin Atlantic spokesman said; some dates are unavailable.
Depending on the date of travel, passengers may do better by using special sale fares--to which the discounts don’t apply. For instance, on selected dates later this month, Virgin Atlantic last week was quoting a $545 special sale fare round-trip L.A.-London versus a $969 advance purchase fare--even with 25% off, not a savings. But savings were possible with April dates.
Contact a travel agent, or call Virgin Atlantic at (800) 862-8621. AARP membership, open to people age 50 and over, costs $8 per year; for information, call (800) 424-3410.
