A woman walking to church early Friday morning was hit and killed by a pickup as she crossed the street, police said.
Vera Doyle, 78, was on her way to 5:30 a.m. Mass at Our Lady of Refuge on Stearns Street near Greenbrier Road when she was hit by the pickup driven by Agapito Hernandez, 63, of Gardena, Long Beach police spokeswoman Karen Kerr Owens said.
Because the woman crossed in the middle of the block and not at a pedestrian crosswalk, Hernandez, who was on his way to work, was not charged.
